I absolutely cannot recommend it to a group with a new or inflexible DM, but if you’ve got the experience and want to try out something fresh, it can be a fantastic option for a long-form campaign. We even instituted a house rule for starting out with a few special actions and spells, because it‘s falteringly weak without them. It breaks a whole lot of rules, but given its core mechanics it turns out nigh on impossible to powerbuild in actual play. That said, my personal favorite homebrew so far has been the Blue Traveler.
